About the society

The Cambridge University Indian Classical Music Society exists to bring Indian classical music — both Carnatic and Hindustani — to Cambridge, and to give anyone in the University the chance to hear it, learn about it and play it.
We put on concerts by visiting artists, run workshops open to complete beginners, and hold informal gatherings for members who play. No prior knowledge is needed for anything we do, and our events are open to the public unless we say otherwise.
The two traditions
Indian classical music has two great living traditions. Hindustani music developed in the north of the subcontinent, and Carnatic music in the south. They share a common foundation — melody organised as raga, rhythm organised as tala, and a central place for improvisation — but differ in repertoire, instruments and performance practice.
The society programmes both, and does not treat either as the default.
Getting involved
Anyone at the University can join, whatever their background and whether or not they play. Come to a concert, come to a workshop, or write to us.
